Valentine's Dinner

So...Valentine's Day was a month ago!!! But, I was browsing through my photos and saw these great pics and it reminded me of how fun it was! Usually Jim and I go out on Valentine's but this year we decided to spend it at home with the girls, (Katie was home from school). I planned a special menu:

                                Lemon-Herb Cornish Game Hen
Wild Rice
Asparagus
Rolls
Sparkling Cider

With Brownies for dessert

Then the girls and I dipped our own chocolate covered strawberries,
which weren't pretty, but they were yummy!!!

Jim came home slightly late for dinner...he has been busier than normal (which is VERY busy!) at work lately, so he stopped off at Smith's (along with 75% of the Draper men!) to pick up some flowers and a card.

He had already gotten me a gift online: This beautiful necklace from
Stella & Dot, called 'Together Forever'.

Ok, so inside Smith's -according to Jim... Tons of men with dazed looks in their eyes, running frantically around! Over by the flowers, there was elbow shoving, grabbing and almost fist-fights breaking out over the remaining bouquets! Jim just started grabbing flowers like crazy! This is what he brought me home!!!

Seriously?? It was hilarious!!! We were all dying laughing at his story of all the men and their pushing and shoving! He said he for sure came out of there the winner! Yep! I believe it!

Slowest Week So Far...

Elder Cassell has been gone for over a year! I'm actually amazed at the speed of the last 6 months, and now I'm thinking..."I can handle a year! I already made it through one!" But I still look forward to Thursdays (His Pday!)!!! Getting his emails are the highlight of the week! Last week's email was somewhat concerning...he told us on Christmas that his Mono (symptoms) had been back for about a month and a half and despite feeling awful, he really hadn't let anyone know, let alone us! So, in last week's email he said he had gotten REALLY sick and had a fever, was throwing up, and developed severe hives on his hands and feet and they swelled up so badly that he could not even stand on them. After a few days of this, he finally confided in the Mission President and was sent to the doctor for a shot of steroids to help with the hives and swelling. Luckily the shot did help and actually he got better and now says he feels better than he has in forever! That was last Thursday...Jim ended up calling the Mission President, (something we had been debating on doing since Christmas) he and Jim came up with a plan. If Logan continues to feel better, then that's great, Life as a Missionary goes on, but if he starts feeling sick again...he will be "ordered" (this is because he keeps on going even if he isn't well!) to stay in bed for two weeks! Then if he gets better with rest, YAY! Life as Elder Cassell goes on as is, but if he does not improve...Plan 'B' is put into motion! (Plan 'B' will probably include coming home to recover!) Nooooooo! Not good! So, we are praying hard for health and strength! If you feel so inclined, Elder Cassell could also use your prayers as well! Waiting to find out how he has been feeling this week has been FOREVER! Tomorrow cannot come sooner!! We pray for good news...

Top Five...

My Hubby frequently has to travel for business.
There are reasons this can be a Bad Thing and reasons this can also be a Good Thing!
Here's my Top 5 of each...

Bad:

5.  I usually don't make dinner!
4.  I have to take out the garbage!
3.  I can't snuggle in bed with him!
2.  He can be tired and grumpy when he gets back!
1.  I miss him!

Good:

5.  I usually don't make dinner!
4.  He doesn't steal the covers!
3.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder!
2.  Sometimes I need a break!
1.  Sometimes he sees someone 'special' at the airport! Like, Our
son Logan when he left on his mission to Texas, Kristin
Chenoweth (The West Wing and my favorite movie RV!), and
then today he sat by James Marsden (27 Dresses) at the airport!

But honestly, I love him so much! He works so hard to provide for me and our family, and NEVER complains! He is a great father to our children and my best friend! Love ya Sweetie!

Making Sense of No School Days...NOT!

Friday there was no school AGAIN!!! First, no school on Monday for the observance of Martin Luther King Day. (In the past my kids still went to school on MLK Day, but I like Monday Holidays...I'm good with taking that day off school). So, school as usual on Tuesday...but come Wednesday??? School gets out at 12:20??? Why, you ask? (We'll get to the answer in a minute) Back to regular school day on Thursday, and finally, no school on Friday! ...Weird Week! So, no school on Friday because its the end of the quarter. As for Wednesday getting out at 12:20...it's another way for Canyons School District to cut the budget. Canyons decided (randomly?) the last Wednesday of the quarter, school will get out early. Okay??? Weird! I don't know... wouldn't it make more sense to get out early on the last school day of the week?

Catching up...

Here I am again...greatly slacking on my blog! Wow! I can't believe the last time I wrote it was January! In my defense, I have been slightly busy with keeping Logan's MissionSite Blog up! Can you believe its been 9 months since Logan left on his mission!!??? I'm thinking that I might be able to survive the two years after all! I still miss him tremendously, but time does go by and it helps that he absolutly LOVES being out in the field! He writes every week and keeps us updated very well and every week I think, "I am so lucky! He is having the time of his life!" He is having so much success and baptisms and loves the people of Texas and loves all his companions! I look forward to each Thursday, (his pday!) when we get his emails, each week! I could not ask for a better experience for him. He has struggled a bit with Mono. But, I guess that has been his opposition to deal with. I think he may have had it when he left! He finally was diagnosed in June and has been treating it and it has been getting better. Slowly but surely! I'm sure the extrememly hot Texas heat has not aided in his recovery. Though lucky for him, since his diagnosis, he has gotten to drive a car around for the most part.
Just look at how happy (& cute!) he is!!!
As far as the rest of our family...here is a quick update...

We went on a Family Vacation to Orlando in May & had a BLAST!!! (Notice we brought along Logan's head!!!)

Katie Graduated from Alta High in June!!!

Rilee and I got to go to NYC with her Dance Company the end of June!

We went up to Star Valley to visit Grandma Dean 3 times this summer!

Katie moved to Provo and is going to school at UVU! Grocery shopping on her own now!

Went camping at the property with Williams Family on Labor Day!
Now you are all caught up!!! We definitely have a lot to be grateful for! We have been blessed with great family and friends! And we're Lovin' Every Minute of It!

Our December Adventures

Its almost the middle of January! December was a VERY busy month for our family...not just because of the Holidays, but also because we were getting ready for Logan to leave on his mission! Logan finally received his mission call the day before Thanksgiving! We were expecting it that day, because now you can track it all closely on the web! So, we knew it would be in the mail that day! But, it was NOT! When Rilee came in with the mail and said it wasn't there, we all sat there stunned, thinking she was kidding or there was a BIG mistake! Turns out there was a big mistake! It truly wasn't there! Logan asked me what we could do, so we jumped in the car and went over to our 'friendly' (that is a bit derogatory...) neighborhood post office and proceeded to stand in the infamous long line. After our 20 minute wait, I explained to the nice gentleman that we were expecting a very important letter that we knew was supposed to have been delivered, but had not come and could he possibly go check around in the back to see if it had gotten misplaced. He looked at me like I was a crazy Draper mom that knew nothing about what I was talking about, but he decided to appease me and go in the back. A few minutes later, he returned and told me there was nothing for me in the back! So, knowing that the next day was Thanksgiving and the mail would not be delivered again until Friday I was not going to give up so easily!

I told Logan and the girls that we would drive around the neighborhoods and look for our mail truck and ask our carrier if she could check in the truck to see if the letter had fallen out on the floor or got put in the wrong box or something! We all piled back into the car and started scouring the surrounding neighborhoods for a mail truck! About 5-7 minutes later we spotted one! I began stocking it, following closely behind, waiting for it to stop long enough to be able to jump out and go talk to them. Finally there were a few mailboxes in a row, so I got my chance! As I ran up to the side of the truck I could see the mail carrier looking cautiously at me through the side mirror. I also noticed that it wasn't our usual mail carrier and that he was wearing a BYU cap, which gave me a little relief, because at least he would know a little bit about the importance of the letter I was searching for! He was very nice, but explained to me that I was not in his route and I was looking for another mail truck. He did tell me that he would mention my dilemma to my mail carrier if he saw her back at the post office later that day. We drove off still searching for the right mail truck. Low and behold we found it a few minutes later! I proceeded to stock this truck until I had enough time to jump out again and approach the mail carrier. This time the carrier was female, but she was subbing for our regular mail carrier! She told me she had not come across any stray letters, but would keep her eyes open. We were all starting to feel like this might not happen. We drove home. I thought what else could I possibly do? I felt like this was important enough that I couldn't stop until I had exhausted every avenue!

I got out the phone book and started calling post offices downtown, searching for the lost letter! I got the same answer...it was no where to be found. I hung up and told Logan that I didn't know what else I could do. Depression had set in. The whole house was in a funk. After about an hour of that, I got up and told the kids we were going out to lunch and gonna get our minds off it and have some fun! By this time it was 2 o'clock and they were all starving and happily agreed. We went to Applebee's and ate and begun to joke around and forget about the predicament that we were in. Logan had texted everyone he had previously told to come over to the house for the opening of his call, and told them it had not come so not to come over. We just assumed that something had happened possibly due to the holiday and that maybe it would come on Friday. Then, he received a text from a friend in our stake who was expecting his call that day also. He told Logan that his call had come...oh dear! That was it! I knew Logan's call was sitting SOMEWHERE most likely misplaced and I was not gonna give up! I told the kids we were going back to the post office, it was 4:30 and maybe the mail carriers had finished their routes and were back at the office and maybe somebody had found his call and we could get it there instead of having to wait until Friday for it to be redelivered. We drove back to the post office and got in the even bigger waiting line and waited! Thirty minutes later we were next in line and I was eyeing the only two employees there...the same guy who I had already talked to earlier that morning who I felt like had not really cared much about our predicament or the other lady...a fresh pair of ears that I could plead my case to. I was praying for the lady! It could be either! Both employees were almost through helping the guests who had been in front of me! The guy! The lady! Ugh! Which one??? Yeah!!! The lady called out 'Next guest please...' I hopefully explained to her our situation and she agreed to go in the back and take a look around. We waited about 5-7 minutes and finally she came out holding a large white envelope!!! No way!!! Was it Logan's call??? She came over and told me she didn't know how this envelope had gotten where it had or why it was just sitting in the back in a random spot but she had found it just lying there. She handed me the big white envelope addressed to Elder Logan James Cassell!!!! We had found it! Wow! What a day! We quickly called and texted everyone and told them to come over! So they did and Logan opened his call and he was called to the Lubbock, Texas Mission, Spanish speaking and was to report to the MTC on January 5, 2011, which was 7 weeks away! It was all very exciting and also a good lesson on perseverance for us!

We had a wonderful month and a half with Logan. The girls had a long Christmas break and Jim took a lot of time off work and we spent valuable time together as a family. We played tons and tons of games, went to movies, played basketball, went to a couple Jazz games, went skiing and just had fun being together! It is kind of surreal that Logan has grown up and is on a mission! It is going to be a big adjustment not having him home, things have been very quiet around here! But, I know that he is where he is supposed to be and is doing something that he has been looking forward to doing for as long as I can remember!

Dropping him off at the MTC was HARD! We went early and parked across the street from the MTC and took  pictures and got to share a very emotional and spiritual moment together in family prayer in the car before it was his time to go. One thing that made the day easier for me was when we drove into the MTC, there were hundreds of missionaries standing out on the curb lining the whole campus! Literally hundreds of missionaries! They were all smiling and waving and the Spirit was emanating from each one of them. They were all so happy and had an Ora about them that delivered a sense of peace to my heart. I knew that Logan was going to be one of those happy, smiling missionaries and that our Heavenly Father's spirit would be with him! I was excited for him to be a part of that and to be able to share that with others out in the mission field. I have a small hole in my heart that was him and I miss him, but I am so happy for him, that he is getting to be a part of something so special! What a great blessing to be able to be a missionary! I am very proud of him and the choices he has made in his life so far! We have heard from him a couple of times so far and he is doing awesome! I have started a blog for him, where I am posting pictures and his letters and emails. Check it out at... http://www.elderlogancassell.blogspot.com/   Hopefully for us, the 2 years will go by quickly! But I am so grateful for this wonderful opportunity!

My Early Thanksgiving Feast

Every once in a while I am lucky enough to have one of those experiences that penetrates your soul and causes a burning so strong that I know that it is Heavenly Father speaking to me. The other night it was through Stephanie Sessions. What a COURAGEOUS woman! She is a breast cancer survivor and one of my dear visiting teachers. Stephanie was the keynote speaker at our 'Young Women in Excellance'. She gave a gut-wrenching account of her battle with cancer, along with her beautifully strong testimony of courage, especially pertaining to the young women of today. As I sat there feasting off her words of wisdom and testimony, I was filled with admiration of her strength, when she asked, "Why do we honor and admire the pioneers? Would we respect them as much if they only walked a mile?".

She went on to explain that it is because of what they endured and how they remained faithful. Heavenly Father gives us, (especially our youth, who have been chosen and saved for the latter days), trials and hardships to refine us and make us stronger. Those trials are what make us better, more faithful, and more righteous, preparing us to forge the way back to Him. What if the pioneers hadn't had their faith tested, what if they had had everything handed to them and living the gospel was easy? What if they weren't persecuted and beaten and driven from their homes time and time again? Would they be the strong examples of faith that they are? My thoughts immediately were turned to my children. They have been ask to endure trials, nothing close to breast cancer or life changing, but hard in their own way. Like Logan playing bball all growing up, practicing hard everyday and then getting cut from the team his Junior year (on his birthday!). Or Katie dancing her whole life in preparation to be on the High school Drill Team and when she finally makes it, she tears her ACL and is out for the whole year and THEN coming back the next year only to tear the OTHER ACL and end her high school dance career! I have thought, how can that be fair? Really? I have had faith that Heavenly Father must have his reasons, but it has been tough to watch them go through some of those trials. But, as Stephanie spoke those words, I knew Heavenly Father was letting me know...'that is why!' I know they will be faced with more trials and maybe some of them will be very tough, maybe even life changing. But, I know that they will become stronger, better people because of their trials. I feel so honored and blessed to be their mom.We have GREAT kids!  I am so proud of them and the choices they have made in their lives. I just want them to know, especially at this time of Thanksgiving, how thankful I am to get to be their mother and I hope that they can learn from me half of what I have learned from them.
I love you.....Logan, Katie and Rilee!!!!

A Halloween Feast!

It is a Halloween Tradition in our family to go to my parent's house for a Spooky Halloween Dinner, on the Sunday before Halloween. This year it actually fell on Halloween night! We have all kinds of Spooky Dishes, like...

*Nephews Maddox and Brad and Niece Alexa-Aren't they CUTE!

Eyeball Salad, Petrified Witch Fingers, Goblin Toes, Giant Bat Eyeballs,
Cow Eyes, and BBQ Grey Matter!!!!!!! It was a Frightful Feast for all of us masquerading Tricksters!

Everyone was in the spirit of Halloween dressed up in GREAT costumes! Pretty GOOD ones I must say!
Grandma and Grandpa were Batman and a Witch...

Andrea and Scott were a Cowboy and his Damsel! Maddox was an Indian Brave and Parker and his girlfriend, Tia were a Baseball Player and Cat and Olivia was Prom Queen...

Molly and Adrian were Flower Children and Brad, Alexa & Audrey were Darthvader, a Witch and Piglet...

Jim and I were Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf- in Granny's Nightgown, Logan was Obi One, his girlfriend Annie was Cindy Lou Hoo, Katie was a Pirate and Rilee was a 50's Girl...

Grandpa goes ALL out for Halloween and has all sorts of witches, ghosts and ghouls inside and outside the house! This year was no exception! Batman out did himself!

The funniest part of the night was when Jim walked in the house, he was trying to scare everyone in his Wolf costume. As he came in growling, little two-year old Audrey was right there caught by surprise! She looked up at him with wide eyes and then very quietly and slowly lay down on the floor, burying her face in the carpet! She didn't cry or scream or anything, she just laid down! It was so cute! We all tried to show her that it was just Jim and then she was obsessed with his mask and wolf paws. During the evening she would come up to Jim asking him where his 'Wuff Costume' was! She had fun playing with the 'Hands'!!!

The Party ended with the kids Bobbing for Apples! Parker won with a 'timed bob' of ONE SECOND! Logan was right there with his time but came up with a big bite out of the apple and so was disqualified! (This is VERY serious bobbing!!!)  Katie, Annie, Olivia and Rilee all got about 3 seconds!!! Brad was VERY diligent and got his first ever legitimate bob!!! And Alexa and Maddox were AWESOME as well! (I am sure there will be some practicing during the coming year in preparation for next year's contest!)

I'd say the Halloween Feast of 2010 was a big success!

Thrilling Memories!!!

Every Halloween for the past 4 years, I have taken Katie to Odyssey Dance's Performance Thriller.
It is a dance concert that is a little scary, wildly entertaining, funny, and technically amazing! We have loved it so much that this year I thought it would be fun to take the whole family... create another 'family memory' before Logan leaves on his mission. Everyone was really excited! So, last night was the Big Night! We all piled in the car and headed north into unfriendly territory...the U of U campus! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! But in the spirit of Halloween, everyone was willing to sacrifice! As we walked to the theater, it was dark and chilly, perfectly setting the mood. Rilee was a bit nervous to encounter the infamous ghouls who greet you at the door of the theater and try to spook you until the show begins, but Logan and Katie were doing their best to be supportive and comfort her.

After we were in Kingsbury Hall and doing our best to avoid the ghouls, we find our seats and wait for the show to start. It's so exciting! Rilee is in the middle of us, fairly well protected. Katie is on the aisle and has a few scares and we all laugh! Shedding our coats and sweaters, we all notice that it is unusually HOT in the theater. Three dances into the performance, Rilee says, "I'm not feeling so good..."  I attributed it to nerves and the heat. I was WRONG!!!!!!! The next thing we knew Rilee was throwing up all over! It was terrible! Poor little thing! Needless to say, we had to all get up in the middle of one of the dances, (all FIVE of us and we were up in front on the 5th row!!! Not exactly inconspicuous!) and leave! The unfortunate people that sat near us had an unpleasant odor to endure until intermission! As for us...not only didn't we get to see Thriller, we were covered in vomit! But...we DEFINATELY had 'Family Memories'!!! Maybe not the memories I had hoped for, but definately Memories!

Frankenstein and His Bride in Thriller!

The Three Jason's in the show!

*The first year I took Katie to Thriller, we sat on the front row. She was TERRIFIED of the ghouls before the show and they kept scaring her because she was so FUN to scare! Then during the show there is the '3 Jason's Dance' and during that, one of them come out into the audience and pick a girl and take her up on stage to scare! Guess who got picked??????? Yep! Katie! Her eyes were as wide as they had been when she was three years old on that same stage for her 1st ever dance concert!

*I called the box office this morning and they are letting us try it again at the Saturday Matinee! Hopefully it turns out a little better for everyone!
